Ueno, Asakusa, and Yanaka

The partial modernization of Tokyo’s older quarters to the northeast has not altered their character and flavor. Although gritty, picturesque Ueno is home to museums, temples, and a cherry-tree-filled park. Dotted with religious sites and traditional restaurants, Asakusa appeals as much to the hedonist as the Buddhist acolyte. With its narrow lanes, old wooden houses, craft stores, sanctuaries, and a mossy cemetery, Yanaka is the best preserved of the three old districts.
