Guidelines for Pronunciation Alphabet

The Estonian alphabet consists of the following letters: a, b, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, š, z, ž, t, u, v, õ, ä, ö, ü. The letters c, q, x, y, z are used only in proper names (of places and people) and in words borrowed from foreign languages. Unlike English, all letters in Estonian are pronounced (for example: the silent “k” in “knee”).

Letter sounds

a = as in “cut”

b = similar to “p” in English

g = similar to “k” in English

j = as in “yes”

r = like in English, but rolled

š = “sh”

ž = as in “pleasure

õ = as in “own”

ä = as in “bat

ö = similar to the “u” in “fur”

ü = as in “cube”

Letter combinations

Some combined letters in Estonian have special pronunciations.

ai = as in “aisle”

ei = as in “vein” ...
