After the Inner City, this settlement on the island of Amager is the oldest part of Copenhagen.There is some evidence that it was inhabited during the Stone Age. In 1521, Christian II invited Dutch gardeners (whom he held in high regard) to this fertile area to plant and run market gardens. A century later, Christian IV built fortifications in the area and a town on an island at the north end.
