MODELING

Modeling is using a physical or graphical representation to explain how a process or object works.

A good model has certain characteristics. It simplifies understanding, provides clarity, and maintains consistent symbology.

A wide range of models exists. Some are mathematical, such as Monte Carlo simulations. Some are graphical like data flow diagrams and flow charts. Whether mathematical or graphical, people who use them must first learn how to interpret them and see the value for their use.

A model provides three advantages. One, it communicates more clearly than narrative text. Two, it is a compact way to display information; three, it can be used to demonstrate ideas.
