DATA VERSUS INFORMATION

What we face today is data overload, not information overload.

The distinction is quite subtle but has a big impact on our lives. Data are facts and figures that have no meaning in themselves. Information, however, is data that are processed into some meaningful form. Hence, information is transformed data.

This distinction is important because many people confuse the two. How many times have you read a report filled with facts and figures that added little to the substance of the document? Or attended a presentation where the speaker provided slides and charts crammed with superfluous data? If the writer and speaker wanted to confuse you and others, they probably succeeded.
