Passive warning signs

This chapter focuses on the three ‘passive’ warning signs: namely, ignorance, certainty and complacency.

Ignorance

I have frequently found, in failing organisations I have managed and when I have been into organisations in trouble, that no one knows what’s actually going on. People may complain about it or they may simply put up with it, but it is amazing that they take so few steps to remedy it. There’s almost always an opportunity to get some information, and if you have got bad information, to get better information. Once you start using it, as I show later in the book, things start to improve and you get into a virtuous circle.
