In 1986, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) changed its name to the World Wide Fund for Nature to reflect the fact that it had moved from being a fundraising body, which collaborated with existing conservation groups, to become the world’s largest non-governmental charity dedicated to the protection and restoration of wildlife habitats.

The symbol for WWF has developed alongside the new outlook, but remains true to the original version that was launched at the headquarters of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in Morges, Switzerland, in 1961. The black-and-white panda has since become a potent symbol for WWF’s work and is indicative of its global reach.
