Introducing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s new identity to its employees, administrator Dr James C. Fletcher ended his foreword to the Graphics Standards Manual by asserting that it was ‘NASA’s look of the future’. The design was certainly an attempt to inject a touch of modernity to the US space programme, replacing James Modarelli’s red, white and blue ‘meatball’ insignia, which had represented the federal agency since 1959, a year after its founding. But the future of the new logotype would prove to be relatively short-lived: the design lasted only until 1992, when it was rescinded in favour of Modarelli’s earlier effort.
