Situated on the left bank of the Seine in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay holds the world’s largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artworks, particularly paintings by Courbet, Cézanne, Degas, Monet, Renoir and Vuillard. It is a relatively new centre for French art, having opened in 1986; the building had served as the Gare d’Orsay and hotel since 1900. During the conversion of this grand Beaux-Arts railway station into a museum, one aspect of the building’s former life was famously retained: the giant terminal clock in the great hall.
