In some versions of the Coca-Cola story, the company name and logo seem simply to emerge in 1886 from the entrepreneurial character of Atlanta pharmacist Dr John Pemberton. But both the name of the carbonated drink and its distinctive lettering had slower, more protracted origins. The fledgling company’s bookkeeper Frank Mason Robinson penned the first version of the script in 1886, but the Coca-Cola logo wasn’t registered as a trademark until January 1893. Even when it was officially recognized by the US Patent Office, its lettering style was fairly loosely applied and only in 1903 did it develop into the more familiar form that the company uses today.
