A 2006 Day-Timers, Inc. study of more than 1,000 adults showed that people achieve their goals when there is a powerful combination of internal motivation and external support. The top motivations and support cited by respondents who were successful at reaching their objectives included the following:

• 86 percent noted determination to make it, even when it got hard.

• 76 percent made a commitment for the long haul.

• 76 percent accepted setbacks and got back on track.

• 71 percent found that visualization was an aid to success.

• 59 percent rewarded themselves for success.

• 57 percent told other people.

• 44 percent set up reminders.

• 40 percent created a step-by-step plan.

• 39 percent asked for help and didn’t do it ...
