WHO’S GOT THE TORCH?
If you are in a dark place, the person with the torch has the prime responsibility to identify where you are and to see the possible next steps on the route. To be effective, the torch has to be held steadily and be focused on potential ways forward. If the torch is flashed round in a jerky way in lots of different directions, it is worse than useless as it blinds people and as a result their ability to see in the dark is diminished.
