#2: Don’t Act Like a Know-It-All

If you’re brand new on the scene of a company, be all ears. Do a lot of listening and observing. Your way of doing things or ideas on what needs immediate attention might be spot-on. But take your time. Get to know the lay of the land. The people. The issues and the way folks conduct business. How things get done—or not. How people communicate. Do they rely on e-mail, or is sitting down to have a conversation the norm?

What are the most pressing issues they’re facing? What are the broader and immediate goals?

If you don’t lay low and observe for a while, people will resent it. They’ll wonder, Just who do you think you are coming in here like a steam roller? They’ll feel like you’re trying to steal their thunder ...
