#5: Don’t Wear Beachwear Such as Flip-Flops, Sandals, Sneakers, or Rubber-Soled Deck Shoes

The worst part of the outfit the candidate wore to an interview at a pharmaceutical firm were the thongs, says recruiter Abby Kohut of Springfield, New Jersey. “The same kind I wear to the beach!”

“Many people in human resources do not like seeing open-toed shoes—which personally doesn’t bother me. But thongs are completely inappropriate,” she says.

What did she conclude about that person? For one, the candidate had poor judgment. “Why someone would decide to wear thongs on an interview is beyond me. The lack of suit was bad enough.”
