#2: Don’t Get Defensive

What’s there to get defensive about? Plenty. Here are a few questions that could rub you the wrong way.

“Why aren’t you working now?” “Why’d you leave your last job?” “Why didn’t you work for five years?” “Why’d you have eight jobs in five years?”

Feeling a little combative?

There’s a good reason for everything that has happened to you in your career. Some of it undoubtedly is touchy. Some things you’d just rather not talk about, right? Other issues take some explaining. As a result—and depending on what happened and how you feel about it—your response can end up sounding aggressive or angry. Even raise suspicion that you’re covering something up. The very word “Why” makes some job hunters jumpy.
