Tell and Show

People tell me all the time that they “are” a certain way. But they sure don’t act it.

“I’m focused. I’m a good communicator and I know exactly what I want,” one young man told me when we met.

So I asked him: “What kind of job are you looking for?” To which he said: “I guess being in an office of some sort with a company.”

Now you tell me. Does that sound like a focused, good communicator who knows exactly what he wants?

Yet he insisted over and over, “I really can communicate. I do know what I want.”

I see resumes and e-mails that state these exact words: “I am a meticulous, thorough professional and pay close attention to details.” ...
