THIS CHAPTER IS DEVOTED TO ORPHANS. I'm not referring to parentless children, but to books that have no friends at the houses that publish them. Our hearts go out to orphaned children. Our society seldom turns its back on them completely. There are public and private institutions to support them, foster and adoptive parents to nurture them. But for the abandoned book there is no protective legislation, no foundling hospitals or asylums, no big brothers, no champions or advocates. There are only stunned authors, helpless agents, and publishers too caught up in the hurly-burly of tomorrow's list to shed a tear for yesterday's.
Perhaps I'm getting nostalgic as I grow older, but I can't help feeling that there have never been so many ...
