51. What Is Facebook Connect?
Facebook Connect is a tool that enables a website to access a user's Facebook account. The most common use for Facebook Connect is as a registration system for websites. Because hundreds of millions of people already use Facebook, it makes registering on a new website simple. Facebook Connect enables you to use your Facebook ID and password to sign into websites. After you log in, it pulls your name and photo into the site, completing the registration process for you. It can also look at your Facebook friends to let you connect with any that have signed up for the website you just joined.
A powerful part of this feature is the capability to easily have content you like placed back on your Facebook newsfeed. This content shows up on Facebook as if it were any other Wall posting. The full extent of your activity is listed, along with a link for people to follow.
Rule of Thumb If you don't want your data shared with a particular site, don't sign up with it. Or, if you want to use your Facebook account there but not have the information relayed back to your Profile, just check the appropriate box when you initially sign on.
