Planning for the Unexpected, Preparing for the Unpredictable

Volatility ensures that an entrepreneur’s best-laid plans will go awry—maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow, but sooner rather than later. As I noted in Chapter 1, we live and work in a time where surprises are commonplace and new trends and technologies seem to emerge out of nowhere. Expect the unexpected should be the entrepreneur’s motto, and while most smart businesspeople recognize the wisdom in this advice, they also continue to make plans.

The late President Dwight Eisenhower said, “In preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” I suggest that entrepreneurs adopt the same paradoxical philosophy. Value the structure, ...
