Definitions and Terminology

Abrasion Resistance     The ability of a material to withstand abrasion without appreciative erosion.
Absorption     The process of drawing fluid or gas into a porous material, such as a sponge soaking up water.
Abuse Coverings and Finishes     Jackets, mastics, or films used to protect insulation from mechanical and personnel abuse.
Acoustics     The study of sound, and its transfer, reflection, and absorption.
Acoustic Insulation     Refers to the measures taken to reduce the transmission of noise from its source to the places that must be protected or insulated.
Added R-value     Thermal resistance added to a construction element by insulation.
Adhesive     A substance used to bond materials by surface attachment.
