School was always pretty much a downer for me. I got into trouble showboating in the halls, hassling the teacher, all the stuff I told you about.

At the same time, I did have my academic moments.

One of them took place in 11th-grade English. We were studying Shakespeare's Hamlet that term. One day in class a sentence from the play seemed to fly off the page and hit me between the eyes like a guided missile. Even at my young age, this 400-year-old sound bite of wisdom made a powerful impression, and it continues to influence the way I approach business today. In my workout gym at home I've got this sentence tacked up on a corkboard, along with a bunch of other shake-your-booty quotations that I read every morning ...
