Before developing your system of rewards, remember that what motivates one person may not motivate the next. When I was general manager of About.com’s web services division, I had working for me a highly talented engineer named Earl. He was, without question, one of our brightest engineers, but I continually struggled to figure out how to motivate this guy. I regularly gave out bonuses, rewards, and incentives that everyone else loved but Earl did not seem to care about.
