The reward will be paid, if earned, after the end of each quarter or each month. To ensure that the firm makes its goals over the long haul, the quarterly rewards might start out modestly and then progress more aggressively.

For example, the firm may decide to pay 10 percent of the potential year-long reward in the first quarter, 15 percent in the second quarter, 25 percent in the third quarter, and 50 percent in the last quarter.
