CHAPTER 6 Get Rich Quick or Get Rich Forever?

Do an Internet search for get-rich-quick schemes. If you check out every search result, you'll probably be sitting at your computer for the best part of a month. The world is awash with people convinced that they have the answer to getting rich quick. What they are suggesting is not so much getting rich quick as getting rich without doing any hard work: getting rich lazily without any guarantees. For the most part, this is an enticement to get people to register (and sometimes pay a lot of money up front). In our opinion and experience, getting rich takes a great deal of hard work, and it doesn't happen overnight.

One of the biggest perpetrators of promoting a get-rich-quick scheme, of manipulating people into thinking it's easy to become a millionaire without doing any work, is the UK government.

Every day, on every commercial channel, you see adverts for the lottery. Huge billboards advertise the lottery. Tickets are available everywhere. People are lured into gambling every time they stop for a newspaper or a cold drink. Most of the lottery adverts are specifically designed to encourage people with modest lifestyles and limited means to part with their money in exchange for the unrealistic expectation of winning millions…without having to work for it. Nowhere in the advertising is there a responsible warning that says:
