INTRODUCTION

The Army profession, like all others, creates its own expert knowledge. That knowledge is then mastered and embedded in professional Soldiers in the form of expertise to be practiced whenever and wherever the American people direct the Army to serve, in peace or in war. This book is a part of that evolving expert knowledge of the U.S. Army, but also a way for civilians to better understand the ethos of the Army profession in regard to character and leadership.
