Before visual structure can be used correctly, some basic story structure concepts must be understood. This chapter will not attempt to explain story structure; instead, it defines some terms that will help link visual and story structure together.
A story has three basic parts:
- Exposition (beginning)
- Conflict (middle)
- Resolution (end)

The beginning of a story is called the exposition. Exposition can be defined as the facts needed to begin the story.
