PREFACE

In 1991, I fell in love with, and later married, a cowboy. No, not a Dallas Cowboy or a pejorative “Wall Street cowboy” or a rhinestone one either, but a real mountain living, cattle wrangling, horse riding, rattlesnake killing, country music lovin’, cowboy-hat-and-boot-wearing cowboy.

He personifies the best of the stereotypical ol’ West cowboys, the ones you see in the classic John Wayne or Gary Cooper movies whose work requires perspiration, not regulation. He isn’t interested so much in rules but rather principles, values, and character. He listens and observes more than he talks. He speaks up when others are afraid to; takes action when others don’t. His word means he’ll do what he says.
