Non-linear Editing Systems

One of the drawbacks of machine to machine editing is that the process has to be linear, i.e. it is only possible to edit a programme by adding one shot to another starting at the beginning of the programme and working through to the end in a serial manner. Changes to shots or sequences can only be made by copying the whole programme to another tape and performing the appropriate changes along the way. Traditional film editing has allowed sequences to be constructed, changed, moved and added to merely by undoing a taped join. The use of the ‘trim bin’ to store such sequences until needed has led to the belief that film editing can be more creative because changes are very easily made.
