Lighting: General-purpose Luminaires

The general-purpose luminaires required are soft-edged spotlights and soft sources.

Soft-edged spotlights

The fresnel spotlight produces a soft-edged beam of light which can be adjusted from narrow angle (spotted) to wide angle (flooded). In the fully flooded condition it behaves like a point source and produces hard-edged shadows. It is a good modelling light and can be used as a keylight, backlight and for scenic lighting.

The luminaire should be fitted with barndoors which are used to restrict the area illuminated. The barndoors are most effective in controlling the shape of the light beam when the luminaire is fully flooded.
