Synchronisation

The television picture is scanned systematically in a series of parallel lines. Each picture is actually covered in two successive scanning patterns (odd and even fields), which are automatically interlaced to form a fully scanned picture (frame).

The television pick-up device generates the picture information on a line-by-line basis. At the end of each line, the scanning spot flies back to begin the next. This continues until a complete field has been scanned, when the scanning spot returns quickly to the top of the picture to commence the next field.
