As 3D printing technology becomes more widespread and affordable, it’s natural for LEGO builders to consider its usefulness. At the moment, the quality of 3D-printed elements still isn’t on par with original LEGO pieces, and the printing costs are too high to allow for mass production. So instead of merely copying pieces that have already been manufactured by LEGO, I’ll explore printing elements to complement existing LEGO pieces. At its current level of development, 3D printing makes it possible to create small quantities of highly specialized elements that fit together with original LEGO pieces but are new elements—pieces that LEGO doesn’t make—and therefore open up new possibilities.
