The following is a (very) short history of the APIC.

The Introduction of the APIC

The APIC was first introduced in the P54C version of the Pentium® processor.

Pentium® Pro APIC Enhancements

The Pentium® Pro made the following changes to the processor's Local APIC (see Figure 24-15 on page 570):

  • The APIC can be enabled to generate an interrupt when either of the processor's two Performance Counters generate an overflow when it is incremented. The Performance Counter Overflow entry (see Figure 24-16 on page 571) was added to the Local APIC's Local Vector Table (LVT) to support this feature.
