A staple of the Internet and omnipresent in everyone’s email is the Nigerian scam. Although it has many variations, a common version of it is an unsolicited email that you receive from someone in Nigeria who tells you that the sender needs to transfer large amounts of money out of Nigeria and needs your help.

Although this scam is now commenced primarily through email, the scam itself is an oldie that dates back to 1588 when it was known as the “Spanish Prisoner con.” In those days, a letter was sent to the victim purportedly from someone on behalf of a wealthy aristocrat who was imprisoned in Spain under a false name.
