Climb out of your box

The phrase “thinking out of the box” is used liberally and in a number of situations. Teachers ask you to do it. Managers demand it. In spite of the overexposure of the phrase, it is an important attribute of creativity. But what is it that defines your box and what does it mean to think out of it?

Everyone has a box of their own thinking style. This box is a collection of default thinking routes that form the way that you expect things to be. When thinking inside the box, you are comfortable and relaxed about what you might discover. Being inside the box is like being in your thinking home. You are also more mentally constrained when inside your box, which is why it is so important to think outside it.
