The IRS wants to see you to talk about your tax return. Don’t panic.

It might not be as bad as you think. Even if it is, you have no choice but to answer the tax examiner’s questions.

But you can be prepared.

Know your audit type—You first want to clarify the type of return examination. The IRS conducts three basic inquiries, ranging from relatively routine, just-by-mail requests for information to more detailed, face-to-face audits.

If you must answer IRS questions, you want to do so via a correspondence audit. As its name indicates, you usually can provide the IRS what it wants by mailing the answers and documents. Most IRS audits are this relatively simple type.
