Truth 18. When Giving Feedback: Criticize Behaviors, Not People

Even really smart people are not immune from making fundamental management mistakes. Take Steve Jobs and Bill Gates as examples. Both were famous for berating employees when they thought the employees’ ideas were weak or their work inferior. Neither had a problem calling employees “idiots” or “stupid.” And these tongue-lashings frequently took place in meetings, further embarrassing the recipients. In spite of the fact that Jobs and Gates were geniuses and helped create two of the most valuable companies in the world, their berating of employees did nothing to improve the performance of those employees.

It seems pretty simple but it’s amazing how many managers ignore this advice ...
