When it comes to the employment transaction, for generations the power of choice has been with the employer. As a result, even if we know better intellectually, it’s easy to operate on the unconscious assumption that we have the luxury of a broad selection of eager applicants while the candidate we finally choose is waiting for just one opportunity from just one likely employer (namely us). So it often comes as a surprise to discover that after we spend the necessary time carefully deliberating among a boiled-down group of, say, three or four possible hires, our final selection has options of his own!
