Truth 52Be Accessible, Not Open-Door

The phrase "I have an open-door policy" was very intriguing to me early in my career. As a younger staff person, I envisioned the day when I could be a supportive, empathetic manager who could respond to any of my employees' needs, questions, and comments whenever they needed me. I imagined people coming to my door (which was open, of course) and asking, "Got a minute?" I would stop what I was doing and talk with the employee, he would thank me for being such an inspirational manager, and then I would go back to my work, just like I never left it. Ah, the naivete.
