“Central Casting” is a Hollywood department that keeps head shots of available actors. These range from people who look like “everyman” or “everywoman,” ideal to play typical family members, to those resembling archetypal doctors or lawyers. Central Casting decides at a glance what type of part an actor suits, filing the photos accordingly. For an aspiring star, it’s a whole lot easier to get the role you want if you look the part, rather than convincing a director to cast against type.
