Chapter 38. Play Your Cards Close to Your Vest

A “poker face” is the neutral expression gamblers wear when they don’t want the other players to know what they’re thinking. The phrase “holding your cards close to your vest” comes from the care they take to conceal their cards from the other players’ eyes. Used together, these tactics ensure that nothing is given away about the quality of your hand. Even the slightest hint of what you are holding can have a direct influence on the behavior of the other players. If they think you’re happy with your cards, they won’t bet. But if you show that you’re unhappy, they’ll bet a lot, knowing they can profit from it.
