Moving On

Under the direction and supervision of the therapist, Lou and his wife, Marion, had been “dating” now for several months. It had been a slow warming, but with Dr. Nesbit’s guidance, Marion had softened her edge and opened up enough to have civil, even heartfelt, conversations with Lou about their shared tragedy.

Lou had come to examine his own motives in not having discouraged his son from joining the service and admitted that he had thought the experience would help Louis “become a man.” Without hesitation, Lou had cried in front of his wife—something she’d rarely seen him do in his younger days, and that had signaled to her that Lou had changed.

Their “dating” continued and their fondness grew.
