President George W. Bush said, “I am the decider.” Politics and personality aside, he was right (despite the clumsy word choice). Bush was the leader. Leaders must make decisions, often on the most difficult challenges facing the organization.

Here are some suggestions to inform and improve your decision making:

• Groups are smarter than individuals. Get advice. Listen to everyone.

• Have a “Kitchen Cabinet” (first used by President Andrew Jackson in 1832). A kitchen cabinet is one or more honest advisors who are usually not part of the leader’s organization. These people never knowingly let the leader make a mistake.
