Feeling under-equipped

Every one of us feels better equipped for certain parts of our jobs than for others. The view we all need to form is whether there is a dangerous shortfall or an allowable weakness. Key factors in deciding whether you are genuinely under-equipped for your role include examining which of your gaps are business critical, which are a function of inexperience and which can be filled by the skills and competencies of others.

First, think:

  • What are the gaps you feel you have? Are they critical to your role? Do you feel poorly equipped because of your lack of experience?
  • Does your job make different demands on you now than it did in the past? Are you required to perform better in areas where in the past you had little involvement? ...
