Receiving difficult feedback

Critical to a successful career is the willingness to receive constructive feedback well, even if what you hear is uncomfortable. Feedback is an important mechanism through which you can grow, learn and develop. Receiving feedback well will demonstrate your maturity and will encourage open dialogue by modelling best behaviour.

First, think:

  • Are you aware of how you tend to react to constructive critical feedback? Are you defensive or open minded?
  • Is giving and receiving challenging feedback a norm within your team? What about within your organisation’s culture?
