Being micro-managed

While you are learning how to do a job it may be appropriate for your manager to pay close attention to what you do and how you do it. But as you grow in confidence and ability this same previously supportive behaviour can feel stifling. Few people flourish while being unnecessarily micro-managed. How do you persuade your manager to behave differently without alienating them?

First, think:

  • Do you think that your boss believes that micro-managing you is in your interest or in their own interest? When you honestly appraise your own approach and performance, are you willing and able to do the job without requiring micro-managing? Can you offer any evidence for this?
