People who don’t show emotion

You may from time to time find a need to interact with a colleague, team member or stakeholder who seems to you always to be withdrawn, insular and incapable of feeling or showing emotion. You may find such an individual difficult, and indeed progress may be hindered by this somewhat distant attitude. Nevertheless, you have to be able to form and maintain a good working relationship.

First, think:

  • What is your working relationship like with this individual? Do you feel your relationship is or could be complementary? Might others enjoy your very different styles?
  • Do you respect what this person brings to your joint encounters?
  • Is the other person happy with your relationship?
  • Do you find it difficult to trust ...
