Patronising or arrogant styles

It is difficult to maintain a positive and professional working relationship with someone who treats you in a patronising way. Sometimes people with this type of personality become arrogant and even aggressive if you resist or offer an alternative point of view. If this is an important relationship, you need to find a solution in order to redress the balance.

First, think:

  • When you are in disagreement with this person, how confident are you of your ground and of the views you are expressing? Does this person trust you and see you as competent?
  • Is this person’s behaviour any different when there are other people in the meetings? Does this individual behave with other people as they behave with you?
