PLACING ACTIVITIES ON THE LUCK-SKILL CONTINUUM

ONE OF MY SONS, Alex, is an avid rower. It is a sport that demands a great deal of hard work and dedication, and, as with running races, skill largely determines who wins. Alex told me that one of his coaches refuses to allow parents and other well-wishers to bid the rowers “Good luck!” before a race. The coach suggests, instead, that they encourage the rowers by saying “Good effort!” As he sees it, there is no reason to wish an athlete good luck if luck doesn't make you a winner.
