Four Essential Skills

Now that you’ve visualized success, let’s make it happen. There are four core skills required to conduct stay interviews effectively: listening, taking notes, probing, and taking responsibility for company decisions. Study this section carefully and return to it after your first three stay interviews to score yourself on your skill-application performance.

Listening

Listening means more than just using your ears. Focus your entire attention on the speaker. Maintain eye contact, nod your head, and don’t interrupt. Hear what your employee actually says. And along the way connect the dots from one thing you hear to another to identify his real opinions about his work experiences.
