One question

What the tool is

This is a simple, yet effective, approach to help a group to ask the right question in order to solve a problem, then explore sub-questions.

When to use it

  • When attempts to solve a problem have failed or solutions have not been forthcoming, it is often because the wrong question is being asked, or the problem is badly framed. One question can help the participants to reframe a problem as a question so that it is easier to find a viable solution.

What you will need

  • Flipchart paper and marker pens.
  • Sticky coloured dots.
  • Sticky notes.

  1. Outline the problem in the broadest terms, answering participants’ questions to ensure that everyone understands it fully.
